Katie and I were recently on the lookout for a type of heating system that was good enough that we would be comfortable using it on all of our rental properties. While we were searching, we went over a large number of different heating systems for homes, everything from water boiler heating systems to oil boiler heating systems and we even checked out passive solar heating systems. But taking energy efficiency into account was a big deal for us, because across several homes the savings can really mount up – and we mean saving money AND saving the environment. Here’s an excerpt from a great article we found from the US Department of Energy that talks about some of the benefits of replacing your furnace:
Replacing Your Furnace or Boiler
Although older furnace and boiler heating systems had efficiencies in the range of 56% – 70%, modern conventional home heating systems can achieve efficiencies as high as 97%, converting nearly all the fuel to useful heat for your home. Energy efficiency upgrades and a new high-efficiency heating system can often cut your fuel bills and your furnace’s pollution output in half. Upgrading your furnace or boiler from 56% to 90% efficiency in an average cold-climate house will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year if you heat with gas, or 2.5 tons if you heat with oil.
If your furnace or boiler is old, worn out, inefficient, or significantly oversized, the simplest solution is to replace it with a modern high-efficiency model. Old coal burners that were switched over to oil or gas are prime candidates for replacement, as well as gas furnaces with pilot lights rather than electronic ignitions. Newer systems may be more efficient but are still likely to be oversized, and can often be modified to lower their operating capacity.
Before buying a new furnace or boiler heating system, or modifying your existing unit, first make every effort to improve the energy efficiency of your home, then have a heating contractor size your furnace. Energy-efficiency improvements will save money on a new furnace, because you will need a smaller furnace. A properly sized furnace will also operate most efficiently. You’ll also want to look for a dependable unit and compare the warranties of each furnace or boiler under consideration.
When shopping for high-efficiency furnaces and boilers, look for the ENERGY STAR label. If you live in a cold climate, it usually makes sense to invest in the highest-efficiency system. In milder climates with lower annual heating costs, the extra investment required to go from 80% to 90%-95% efficiency may be hard to justify.
Specify a sealed combustion furnace or boiler, which will bring outside air directly into the burner and exhaust flue gases (combustion products) directly to the outside, without the need for a draft hood or damper. Furnaces and boilers that are not sealed-combustion units draw heated air into the unit for combustion and then send that air up the chimney, wasting the energy that was used to heat the air. Sealed-combustion units avoid that problem and also pose no risk of introducing dangerous combustion gases into your house. In furnaces that are not sealed-combustion units, backdrafting of combustion gases can be a big problem.

There you have it! With just a little bit of prep work and the help of a great contractor, we were able to both lower our heating costs (several of our rental properties are in northern New England, where the winters are long and harsh!), and do another little bit of our part in saving the environment from unnecessary waste and pollution. Hope it helps you too!

Everything is created to give advantages to us. Like any other products of technology, radiant heating systems are also very beneficial not only to us but also to our environment.
The main purpose of this kind of technology is to provide us with a heating system that is more comfortable and healthier to use. In most cases, all surfaces in the room like floors, walls and furniture are heated by this kind of technology to the same temperature.
Here are some of the advantages that we can get from using radiant floor heating system. This technology can lower energy and heating costs because with it, we can lessen the use of our heating appliances. Another benefit of this is that it gives comfort for the reason that with heated floors, our place will no longer have cold areas thereby allowing us to walk comfortably while being barefooted. Also, it can offer a healthier environment in a sense that we can opt for a better alternative than that of conventional forced-air heat since this can help avoid blowing dusts that can circulate around our home. In addition, radiant floor heating is invisible and silent thus, making us not to hear the noise as well as not to notice the system operating. Lastly, this kind of technology is energy-efficient which help promote a healthy and green environment.
Through these advantages, many people are now using radiant heating systems. With this, it only shows that we can still find an alternative that we can use not only to benefit us but also to protect our environment as well as to conserve our energy. Having this kind of technology in our home is one of the best ways of saving energy and in creating a greener environment. This one is the best heating solution especially for homes that are built in wintery places.
Hot water boilers, also reffed as hydronic boilers are one of the most important systems to be installed in appertments, houses and also industrial areas. Their main purpose is to heat water with the help of either electricity or natural gas, depending what can be used. They can be categorised into two units – large units which are used in buildings or portable units. Hot water boilers are quite expensive to install although they have an added advantage of longer life span once they’re installed. There are different types of hot water boiler systems which work in different ways:
Radiators systems
Radiator heating system is a little outdated nowadays but was commonly used in homes. The boiler circulates water to radiators through pipes then to iron heat exchangers where it aquires heat which is being emitted by the iron.
Geothermal systems
Its usually located in areas where there are geothermal activities. This type of hot water boiler system collects heated water from the earths surface. The water is then directed to water-filled loops and then circulated in the building where it is installed. This circulaton makes the water to cool to use and then transfered to a drainage tank.
Hot water baseboard system
Baseboard system requires base board to be installed in the rooms where pipes pass through. Such baseboards are made of rectagular metalic units with metal fins which increase the amount of radiation and the distribution of heat to the pipes.
Radiant heat floor systems
These are networked system of plastic pipes fixed as a subfloor within the building materials for the supply of heat. The main purpose of these building materials is to retain and radiate the heat. The pipes are connected to the main heat boiler where hot water is pumped constantly warming the concentrate and the foor above it constantly.
To summarize, most of the hot water boiler systems can be expensive to install, but they get the job done by distributing heat evenly within a house, apartment or industrial space.
Insulating your house is a very important task in northern nations, and choosing the best type of insulating material that will fit all your requirements can often be hard. In the past most houses were insulated with Asbestos; the employment of Asbestos has been banned in many developed countries around the world due to the health risks. A lot of things happen to be built using asbestos, for its many natural and chemical qualities. Asbestos is a set of six naturally occurring silicate materials, made up from thin fibrous crystals, it’s a very strong material resistant to fire and heat, it has regular tensile strength and in addition it is resistant against chemical damage and doesn’t conduct electricity, furthermore, it works well in the form of a noise barrier, each one of these qualities make it the best choice for insulation reasons and also other items like outdoor furniture, car brakes, etc. The utilization of Asbestos for insulation shot to popularity in the late 19th century in bloom with the industrial revolution. Only until just a few decades ago, in the late 70’s more research was done around the health side effects asbestos have on the human body and now we realized it really is such a significant hazard.
The most common means of being exposed to asbestos is actually by being surrounded by these and moving them or disturbing them, by doing this you inhale the air with flowing fibres. The fibres make their way to your lungs and after several months, years, decades irritating your throat and lungs gradually causing inflammation and scarring with the bronchioles or throat, which could in turn result in serious respiratory system issues.
Asbestos is a classified carcinogenic in several developed countries since the late 70’s. Research indicates that contact with asbestos can lead to cancer of the lung as well as a somewhat rare cancer within the membranes that line the chest area and abdomen. Contact with asbestos might also increase the risk of a disease referred to as “Asbestosis”, which is an inflammatory condition affecting the lungs that may cause shortness of breath, coughing and long term lung damage. All these diseases from asbestos particle direct exposure are highly not likely, unless you are regularly subjected to asbestos fibres in the air. It is considered smart to eliminate asbestos out of your home, but have it done by an expert. An expert will have all of the equipment required and is an authority who wouldn’t endanger his/her own life or those of individuals residing in the house.
Often it is a good idea to hire a specialist. If you are redesigning your cellar and you’ve no clue what to do with the vents once you get rid of the ceiling panels, it may be a good idea to hire a professional to sort the whole thing out. If you are changing the floor in the family area and you have no idea of what a hammer looks like, I’d personally say it’s an excellent thought to get an expert. You have to evaluate the time you’ll be spending on the project, if it’s some thing you’ll need a few days to finish then I’d say go on and try it for yourself. However, if it’s something that calls for substantial preparing and drawing out plans and modifications, you will possibly not wish to make your weekends for the rest of your existence to make your house beautiful.
Any time you rely on someone else you typically run the risk of being overcharged, especially with something such as redecorating or remodeling. You’ll need to look around a lot to find a good cost and even after you discover someone, the wait may be a lengthy one. One of the advantages you may have when finding a specialized decorator in your house is that the designer will look at the house as being a fresh slate. He/She hasn’t been looking at the same furniture the past Twenty years or so, for them to come in with a crystal clear mind in regards to what will work for the home. A professional designer also offers (hopefully) years of experience in redecorating keeping in mind the owner’s style as well as house’s architectural crutches. Chances are you are probably not residing in your dream home, layout wise, so a competent designer can help you get over those crummy old kitchen cabinets. The designer may also help take on the space in such a way you’d probably never have thought, an established decorator provides you with some refreshing creative ideas.
It could be nice to use a specialist designer should you have little time, but if you are tight on spending budget you should consider asking you close friends to be truthful with you and ask them to let you know what they really think of your space. Because there are many online resources, there is hardly any need to find specialized guidance. There are actually YouTube video clips for pretty much anything, and web sites by the bucket load to help you to coordinate fabric designs. When you dedicate a weekend break or two on your challenge and you recruit several good friends to assist out (with the promise of beer) you can do it. And you can make it so much fun.
